TSMC and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Establish Joint Venture for Next-Generation Image Sensors
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation announced the formation of a joint venture, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, in Koshi City, Japan. This joint venture will focus on the development and volume production of image sensors for smartphones, utilizing advanced manufacturing process technology. Sony will be the sole controlling shareholder, operating the JV as a consolidated subsidiary. Sony plans to contribute approximately 465 billion yen, while TSMC will contribute approximately 282 billion yen, with contributions phased based on market demand. The JV is expected to commence volume production in 2029 and may receive support from the Japanese government. Sony will lead in core image sensor technologies, development, and product planning, while TSMC will leverage its advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise. The partnership aims to accelerate commercialization, advance innovation, and strengthen manufacturing capacity in the image sensor market. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
