Hydro One Files Leave-to-Construct Application for $1.3B North Shore Link Transmission Project

Hydro One Limited filed a Form 6-K with the SEC reporting that its subsidiary Hydro One Networks Inc. and Hydro One Sault Ste. Marie LP (HOSSM) submitted a joint leave-to-construct application to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) on September 11, 2026, seeking approval to build the North Shore Link. The project involves constructing a new 230-kilovolt transmission line connecting Mississagi Transformer Station (TS) near Wharncliffe to HOSSM-owned Third Line TS in Sault Ste. Marie, along with upgrades to Mississagi TS, Algoma TS, and Third Line TS. The approximately $1.3 billion investment is expected to strengthen connections between northeastern and northwestern Ontario and improve the resiliency of the northern transmission system, with the line expected to be in service in 2029. Through Hydro One's First Nation Equity Partnership Model, nine potential First Nation partners will have the opportunity to invest in a 50 per cent equity stake in the transmission line component. The application, filed under Section 92 of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998, includes details on the project's route, design, timing, and cost.
