BHP Group Limited: Jansen Stage 2 Potash Project Update and Impairment Charge
BHP Group Limited has announced an update on its Jansen Stage 2 Potash Project, with the total investment estimate increased from US$4.9 billion to US$6.9 billion, and first production now expected in late FY2031. This revision is due to a detailed review of cost and schedule estimates, addressing cost and schedule pressures primarily from additional construction hours, material quantities, and escalation. Despite the increased investment, the project is 16% complete with 83% engineering progress, and is expected to produce approximately 4.36 million tonnes per annum, contributing significantly to global potash supply. The project maintains a strong expected internal rate of return of 11% and EBITDA margins above 65%. Concurrently, BHP expects to recognize an impairment charge of approximately US$2.3 billion related to the Jansen project due to higher forecast capital intensity. Jansen Stage 1 remains on track for mid-CY2027 production.
